WOMEN AND POWER
Today, women MPs account for only 11% of India’s lower house Lok Sabha. In an effort to increase these numbers, a Women’s Reservation Bill proposes reserving 33% of seats for women in the lower house of the Parliament of India. Despite the upper house’s approval of this in 2010, the bill is still pending. Such governmental constraints from leadership enforce and exacerbate the unbalanced position of women in Indian society. Without proper political representation, it is difficult to pass laws that will protect women’s rights and increase their participation in reforming old social structures as well a building new ones.
